The Books that have changed my life ...

Book #1
Title: The Holy Bible
Author: The word of God as told to his followers

Topic: Spirituality, Inspirational, Life Principles, Religious Aspects, Biography

How it influenced my life:  Beyond the obvious salvation, I get wisdom from reading it every time I pick it up. It sits on my bedside and I try to randomly open and read passages daily. It is my source of strength, hope, and love.

Book #2
Title: The Last Lion: William Spencer Churchill
Author: William Manchester

Topic: Life Principles, Inspirational, Biography, Perseverance, Success, History

How it influenced my life:  I keep the two part series on my book shelf and reread it every two years or so. Reading about Churchill and his leadership of the British people, in the face of Nazi Germany reminds me to always stand your ground in the face of fear. His wit, wisdom and leadership skills are to this day unparalleled in there greatness. His life stands as the ultimate model of leadership in the face of adversity.

Book #3
Title: The Screwtape Letters
Author: C.S. Lewis

Topic: Happiness, Inspirational, Life Principles, Quality of Life, Religious Aspects, Self Actualization

How it influenced my life:  This book chronicles a conversation between the devil and one of his evil agents who is sent out to conquer men's souls. What C.S. Lewis did with this book was help people (i.e., me) see the many ways we innocently walk down paths, which take us away from God. He is a brilliant writer and his use of logical reasoning in his writing is without compare. This book changed the way I view my life for the better and helped me to stop and look at people and their motives before I innocently follow or "buy in" to their ideas, philosophies and offers that appear too good to be true!

Book #4
Title: A Severe Mercy
Author: Sheldon Vanauken

Topic: Happiness, Inspirational, Quality of Life, Self Actualization, Relationships

How it influenced my life:  This book taught me that true love overcomes all else and that the most painful of experiences change us (if we allow them to) in the most beautiful of ways. This book helped me make sense of my mother's death in my own life and gave me greater insights into how this experience shaped me and saved me in ways I never thought possible.

Book #5
Title: I and Thou
Author: Martin Buber

Topic: Relationships, Happiness, Life Principles, Self Actualization, Self Realization, Religious Aspects, Spiritualit

How it influenced my life:  Reading this book helped me become more aware of my relationships with other people. Martin Buber explains that we have an ability to be "there" in the moment with people, or art or music and to truly understand them and "connect" with others in a meaningful way that transcends self. Although these moments are not constant or static in any relationship we experience, we can become open to them and therefore more aware of them, in order to experience them more meaningfully. Buber describes the "I-thou" relationship as the perfect form of relating and thus, how God is the eternal "thou" relationship in the "I-thou" relationship. His philosophies changed my life by helping me understand that when relationships go beyond our one sided view of our world, to try and understand others, we are better communicators and will experience more meaningful relationships.
